Iceland
Iceland lies at the junction of the Eurasian and North American plates. The clash of these two great continental plates and the resulting volcanic activity inspired me to produce a series of prints under the themes 'rift' and 'geysir'. The sheer power of the geysirs along with the falls of Gullfoss provided me with an unforgettable experience and as a result I made a large body of work on this theme. Therefore the prints shown here and in the exhibition are a small selection from the final collection.
These are mainly monochrome prints. Initial layers of black and grey ink have been overprinted with white utilising a wet on wet method. This allowed the previous layers to emerge as the inks combined and dried. I etched lines into the surface of the prints to represent the two tectonic plates which according to the Icelandic Land Survey are drifting apart at a rate of 2cm a year.
