Red Sea
This series of paintings started out as a response to my experiences diving in the Red Sea. I always dive with a camera and have produced many objective images of life on the coral reef. However, I also felt the need to explore some of my ideas and experiences in a more subjective way through painting. This coincided with my acquisition of a larger studio, allowing me to work on a bigger scale and also to contemplate a developing body of work with the aid of more extensive wall space where I could view paintings together.
As the paintings have developed, the subject matter has changed from the abstract fleeting glimpse of fish underwater to paintings influenced by waves, horizons and skies. I have deliberately constrained my palette during this ongoing series of paintings so to explore the colour, forms and compositions of my (mostly imagined) subject matter. The source material has also shifted to include recent trips to deserted Northumbrian and Lincolnshire beaches.
I am now revising this theme through experimental use of linocut mono prints - see directly below for work in progress...a number of the original canvasses have been cut up, reduced in size and overworked....
