This is Dembo Fixer working in his beach side space making a 'bogolan' textile. Bogolan means ‘made from mud’ in Bambara, the main language of Mali. The Bogolan technique of dyeing and printing cotton is entirely organic and kind to the environment. It contains no harmful mordants or chemicals and it uses dried leaves and tree bark as dye stuff.

See below for further images.

I have been working with Dembo to make a pilot for a film about environmental issues affecting the village. The film is called 'Kafountine Voices' and will feature a number of individuals talking about their personal concerns. Dembo talks about the beach and how it should be kept clean. The film is in Mandinka/Djola and will be completed at the end of 2013.
